Insight into the impact of the construction of wind farms

The tool developed by MARIS provides insight into the impact of the construction of wind farms in relation to nature, fisheries, use, spatial planning, and more. The application provides access to the best available datasets in these areas.

Additional map layers can be added via the menu so that the user can create their own set-up with most important datasets for his/her decisions. In the example above, the potential search areas for wind farms in 2030 have been superimposed.

As a user, you can draw a wind farm yourself. After the farm is ready, an estimate of costs and yield is immediately indicated at the top right. By playing with the datasets offered, an indication will be obtained of which stakeholders will experience problems. In this case, the zone seems to be quite well chosen based on the available data, but it is far from the coast, which means that there are higher costs for connection to the grid.

Via the “i” next to the model, the user can get additional detailed information about the calculated values after clicking on the drawn wind farm. In addition, the legend and metadata of each map layer can be viewed.

In subsequent versions, for example, more ecological models can be added, and more direct access can be given to “conflicting” datasets (even if they are not enabled). The application has enough flexibility to be further expanded.
